Chapter Twenty-Four

There was complete silence in the car as Dr. Tomoah drove away from the scene. Shy kept her eyes locked on the back window, checking to be sure that they weren’t being followed. The only thing that was on her mind was why? Who were those men and what did they want with her? It was obvious to her that they didn’t intend to kill her. If they did, they could have just fired through the window and killed her.

No. This has something to do with Colonel Mathis and me introducing him to Taavetti.

Although she joked with him and Evelyn about being a government operative, in the eyes of her attackers, that’s exactly what she was.

Evelyn looked over at Dr. Tomoah. “Where are we going?” she asked. Shy looked at him too, because it was a good question.

“I don’t know.”

“Is anybody following us, Sandy?” Evelyn asked.

“I don’t think so.”

“Well slow down then Joshua, before you get us killed.” Evelyn looked in the backseat at Shy. “Normally I’d ask if you always carry a machine gun around with you, but I believe we already covered that. But…”

“Well, I for one, am glad she does,” Dr. Tomoah said and Evelyn cut her eyes at him. “Well, I am. She saved our lives.”

“But, what I want to know is what were you doing there and what did you mean, you’re an operative of the United States Government?”

Without going into any details, Shy explained what she believed was happening.

“I’m sorry I got you into this,” Shy said and Evelyn and Dr. Tomoah looked at each other. “What?”

“We thought those men had come for us,” Evelyn said.

“Why?” Shy looked at the case on the seat next to her. “Because of what’s in that case?”

Evelyn told Shy that she was in Palermo to examine a papyrus fragment having to do with Mary Magdalene and then explained the significance of it and the controversy that surrounds it.

“I was asked if I’d be willing to look at it and give an opinion. Just before you got there, Dr. Whitfield told us that…” Evelyn paused. “That there were people, powerful people, that wanted it.”

“And are willing to kill for it,” Dr. Tomoah said.

“Whit did not say that, Joshua,” Evelyn said.

“No, they just proved it to us! Whit is dead, Evelyn. You cannot put a positive, intellectual spin on this. The man is dead!” he shouted.

“Don’t you think I know that?” Evelyn shouted back.

“Would you two stop yelling and calm down,” Shy said.

“That’s easy for you to say. You seem to be quite comfortable with murder and death,” Dr. Tomoah said.

“It was all right a minute ago when I was saving your life.”

“Sandy is right. We don’t need to turn on each other.”

“What are we going to do then?” Dr. Tomoah asked as Shy dug around in her purse looking for her phone. She called Black, but there was no answer. Then she called Napoleon, but it went straight to voicemail.

“Something’s wrong.”

“What is it, Sandy?”

“Michael isn’t answering and neither is Napoleon.
